Choosing a cake size sounds simple until you are staring at a guest list. Here is the honest, practical guide we use with every customer so nobody goes without a slice.
Finger slices vs dessert portions
There are two ways to serve a cake, and they change the numbers a lot:
- Finger slices are the slim slices handed round at a party or sent home in a napkin.
- Dessert portions are larger, plated slices served with a fork, often with cream or fruit.
A cake that gives 24 finger slices gives roughly 12 dessert portions. Decide which you are serving before you pick a size.
A quick serving guide
- 6 inch serves about 10 to 12 finger slices. Lovely for a small birthday.
- 8 inch serves about 20 to 24. Our most popular size.
- 10 inch serves about 35 to 40.
- 12 inch serves about 50 to 55.
- Two tier from around 40 upward, depending on the tiers chosen.
- Three tier is ideal for weddings and large parties of 80 plus.
Things that change the maths
A few real-world factors nudge these numbers:
- Time of day. An evening celebration with food already served needs less cake.
- Who is attending. A children's party gets through smaller slices.
- Is it the only dessert? If the cake is the star, size up.
When in doubt, choose the larger size. Leftover cake keeps well for a few days and is never wasted.
Tall cakes and tiers
Adding height is a smart way to serve more people without a much wider cake, which also looks impressive on the table. If you are planning a wedding or a milestone birthday, a tiered design gives you flexibility on flavours too.
If you tell us your guest numbers and the style of event, we will recommend a size and shape that fits, with no pressure to over-order.
